Chapter 13

“They did not stay long,” Ludiff Benavee Plin commented.

“Less than twenty minutes,” said the spy.

The hooded figure turned his dark shroud to the native. “Did they bring anything with them; did they leave with anything?”

“One was carrying a pouch. He had it when he left, but nothing else, as I could tell.”

“And who is in the building?”

“A native technician named Unonen/Linn. His family is well-known here although he has business throughout Devil’s Gate.”

The spy wasn’t a Lip’polin, but rather a shade-variant able to change the color of his skin to match a background. His kind were popular in the secretive trades, able to move nearly invisibly in certain environments. The Clan used them extensively since the Kracori form was unable to move in groups without being noticed.

Benavee nodded and then turned to the three other Clan members with him. They made an ominous spectacle; nearly eight-foot-tall and covered in the grey cloak and grey hood with its blacked-out mesh interior. They wore gloves so even their hands were not exposed. Benavee longed for the time when this disguise could be discarded, when the Kracori could once again show their face in the galaxy and have species tremble and bow whenever they came near. His race had never had the chance to fulfill that promise, a promise made long ago by the evil Klin. The Kracori Legend was to stand beside the Klin as leaders of the galaxy, the Kracori force to the Klin’s cerebral management. At the time, the Kracori accepted their role; they cherished the idea of being the superior strength in the galaxy. But even then, they never fully accepted their role as co-leaders. Eventually, their strength and superior Legend would supplant the Klin, leaving only the Kracori to rule.

Unfortunately, that was not to be. And much of the responsibility for the Kracori loss of Legend came from the race of beings he had followed to this rundown warehouse district—the enigmatic Humans.

Benavee grew up hearing the stories and despising the Human race. At this moment, he would just as soon slaughter every last one of them, beginning with these five. But first he needed to recover his printing plates. Undoubtedly, they were within the building.

The spy told them about the building’s security features, at least those on the outside. Many were evident, although the Ludiff knew those were only the ones meant to be seen. He didn’t fear the occupant. All he had to make sure was that the native did not get away—and with the plates.

And that was why Benavee decided to dispense with subtlety and sent his team in using a sonic battering ram, blasting the door inward and then rushing in with a support team of ten made up of various races, including two Lip’polin natives.

The native occupant was seated at a worktable and was caught by surprise. He tumbled to the floor and began crawling away. With his four arms and two legs he was as fast as most two-legged creatures. Even so, he didn’t get far.
